How to configure SQL Server Agent to Restart SQL Server and SQL Server Agent Services Automatically

Introduction

In this tip we will take a look at how to configure SQL Server Agent to restart SQL Server & SQL Server Agent Services automatically if they end up stopping unexpectedly.

As a best practice database administrator should configure automatic restart of SQL Server and SQL Server Agent Services. Else you may end up getting pager alerts or phone calls in the middle of night asking you to looking into the issue.

Steps to configure automatic restart of SQL Server Services:-

1. Open SQL Server Management Studio, right click SQL Server Agent and select Properties.

2. In the General Page, select “Auto Restart SQL Server if it stops unexpectedly” check box and also select “Auto Restart SQL Server Agent if it stops unexpectedly” check box as shown in the snippet below.

3. Click OK to save the changes to ensure uptime for SQL Server & SQL Server Agent Services.
